Q: What disc brake maintenance is recommended?
Disc brakes are either mechanical (using a cable to move the brake pads) or hydraulic (using mineral oil or brake fluid). Both types offer reliable performance under all conditions (dry, wet, etc.). Other advantages include:
- No rim wear
- Less hand strength to operate
- More tire clearance
Practical tips for best performance
- Always use the front and rear brakes together; shift your weight to the back of your bike on steep downhills
- Apply your brakes intermittently rather than continuously, especially on long downhills
- Do not keep the brake pulled when the disc is hot
- Do not apply any oily agents to the disc
- Clean the disc and brake pads with isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner
- Change the brake fluid after 1-2 years
- Check brake pads regularly for wear and change when needed
