Disc brakes are either mechanical (using a cable to move the brake pads) or hydraulic (using mineral oil or brake fluid). Both types offer reliable performance under all conditions (dry, wet, etc.). Other advantages include:

  • No rim wear
  • Less hand strength to operate
  • More tire clearance

Practical tips for best performance

  • Always use the front and rear brakes together; shift your weight to the back of your bike on steep downhills
  • Apply your brakes intermittently rather than continuously, especially on long downhills
  • Do not keep the brake pulled when the disc is hot
  • Do not apply any oily agents to the disc
  • Clean the disc and brake pads with isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner
  • Change the brake fluid after 1-2 years
  • Check brake pads regularly for wear and change when needed
