Adjust the cranks on multispeed models

As packaged, the bicycle is set up for pedals to be installed in the upper position on the crank. As your child grows, you can adjust this to provide for a longer pedal stroke.

  1. Using the 15 mm wheel spanner wrench, remove the pedal from the crank. You will turn the pedals toward the rear of the bicycle to remove them.

Remember that the left pedal has a left-hand thread.

  2. Using a 6 mm hex key wrench on the inside of the crank, remove the thread cover (A) from the lower position (B) of the crank.
  3. Replace the thread cover into the upper position (C) of the crank and lightly tighten.

  4. Reinstall the pedal in the lower position by tightening toward the front of the bike as shown below. The left pedal will tighten counter-clockwise.

Remove the front wheel

  1. Disconnect the front brake cable by squeezing the brake arms together (1 in image below) and unhooking the metal noodle (2) from the quick release cradle (3).

  2. Loosen the front wheel axle nuts (A in image below) and guide the wheel down and out of the dropouts.

Install the front wheel

  1. With the brake cable disconnected, guide the wheel up and into the fork dropouts and between the brake pads.

  2. Seat the axle into the dropouts. Using the 15mm wheel spanner wrench, tighten the wheel axle nuts to 186 in-lbf/21 Nm, which translates to approximately 3/8 turn of the wrench as illustrated below.

  3. Reconnect the front brake cable by squeezing the brake arms together (1) and inserting the metal cable noodle end (2) into the quick release cradle (3).

  4. Lift the front end of the bike and spin the front wheel to check if the wheel is centered and does not wobble.

Remove the rear wheel

  1. Disconnect the rear brake cable by squeezing the brake arms together and unhooking the metal noodle from the quick release cradle (same as the front brake cable--see images above).
  2. Loosen the rear wheel axle nuts and slide the rear wheel forward in the dropouts so the chain is loose.
  3. Lift the chain off of the rear sprocket and guide the wheel back and out of the dropouts.

Install the rear wheel

  1. With the brake cable disconnected, guide the wheel into the dropouts and between the brake pads.
  2. Seat the rear axle in the dropouts and place the chain on the rear sprocket.
  3. Pull the wheel back until the chain is taut and the rear wheel is centered.
  4. Using the 15mm wheel spanner wrench, tighten the wheel axle nuts to 186 in-lbf/21 Nm, which translates to approximately 3/8 turn of the wrench as illustrated above.
  5. Reconnect the rear brake cable by squeezing the brake arms together and inserting the metal cable noodle end into the quick release cradle (same as the front brake cable--see images above).
  6. Lift the rear end of the bike and spin the rear wheel to check if the wheel is centered and does not wobble.
