There are three different versions of the Future Shock 3.0:
  • 3.3 cartridge (hydraulic damping that is adjustable)
  • 3.2 cartridge (hydraulic damping, but not adjustable)
  • 3.1 cartridge (spring actuated)

Cartridges are interchangeable.

Note that the Future Shock 3.0 cartridges are retrofittable to older bikes that are equipped with FS 1.0/1.5/2.0 cartridges. FS 3.0 cartridges will be available to riders on Specialized.com. Note there are minimum stack height requirements when retrofitting an FS 3.0 cartridge to older bikes - be sure to consult the Tech Bulletin linked below to ensure the minimum stack height requirement for a given bike is met:

Future Shock - Retrofit Compatibility

CAUTION: Top tube accessory bags that strap around the steerer tube below the stem are not compatible with a Future Shock damper, which is equipped on all models. Use of a strap around the boot of the Future Shock damper may damage the boot, which will impair the waterproofness of the Future Shock. All three models share the same boot – S223100001. If the boot is torn or damaged, it needs to be replaced immediately.

Stack Height

Bike models equipped with the Future Shock 3.0 have a maximum of 30 mm in stack height measured from the fork steerer tube. If you use the tall (15 mm) headset spacer, you can add a maximum of three 5 mm spacers under the stem. See C and A in image below.

Stem Shim

If you wish to use a standard 1-1/8” after-market stem in place of the Future Stem, you will need to add a shim, S234800001. The shim is included with purchase of a Future Shock 3.3 or 3.2 cartridge.

Unlike previous iterations of the Future Shock, the new FS 3.0 cartridges do not require a shim when mounting a Future Stem.

Note that the upper-tube of the FS 3.0 cartridges have an engraving to show where to align the slot on the stem shim and stem.

Adjusting the Future Shock

Future Shock 3.3 has an adjuster knob to control the damping. Turn the knob counterclockwise to the open position for a softer ride over rougher terrain. Turn the knob clockwise to the closed position for a firmer ride on smoother surfaces. The Future Shock does not lock out.

The medium spring (black) is installed on all models. If you wish a firmer/softer ride, you can replace the medium spring. See the table below for the recommended spring based on rider weight.

Extra sets of springs (all three) are available – S233100001.

Riders can further tune the feel of their Future Shock 3.0 cartridge by adding preload washers on top of the main spring. The maximum number of preload washers that you can install into a cartridge is 5. All bikes equipped with FS 3.0 cartridges will include preload washers in the small parts box. Additional preload washers are available – S233100002.

Instructions on changing springs and adding/removing preload washers can be found in the Future Shock 3.0 User Manual. The process is also available as an animation.

Service & Maintenance

The Future Shock is designed to offer consistent performance for the life of the product.  With a fully sealed design, the Future Shock assembly does not need service beyond wiping dirt and dust from the exterior.

Should the rubber boot become fatigued from use, replacements are available – S223100001. If the boot is torn or damaged, it needs to be replaced immediately. Take care not to strap accessories around the Future Shock.
