Adjustable Geometry

The Levo SL features adjustable headset cups and shock extension flip chips. The adjustable headset cups enable you to customize your bike with a steep head tube angle for short/playful handling or a slack head tube angle for increased stability.  The flip chips will increase or decrease the bottom bracket height to improve clearance or increase stability. You also have the option to switch to a 29" rear wheel.

As shipped, the bike has a head tube angle of 64.5° (see image below), a bottom bracket height of 348 mm, and a chainstay length of 432 mm.

With a 27.5 rear wheel*, you can change the geometry in several ways:

HEADSET CUP
NEUTRAL (default)
+1° (rounded)
-1° (rounded)
FLIP CHIP SHOCK EXTENSION (LOW) - DEFAULT

Head angle: approx. 64.5° (default)

BB height: approx. 348 mm

Head angle: approx. 65.5°

BB height: approx. 349 mm

Head angle: approx. 64°

BB height: approx. 346 mm

FLIP CHIP SHOCK EXTENSION (HIGH)

Head angle: approx. 65.0°

BB height:  approx. 353 mm

Head angle: approx. 66.0°

BB height: approx. 355 mm

Head angle: approx. 64.0°

BB height: approx. 352 mm

*29" rear wheel will increase chainstay length by 10 mm; head angle and bottom bracket height remains the same.

Adjusting the Head Tube Angle

The head tube angle can be adjusted with the adjustable headset cup. The bike is shipped with the zero degree offset cup installed (A). The +/- 1 degree headset cup (B) is in the small parts box.

The headset uses standard bearings, with a 1 1/8" upper bearing and a 1 1/2" lower bearing.

 To change the headset cups:
  1. Loosen the stem bolts (2) that attach the stem to the fork steerer (4)
  2. Loosen and remove the SWAT tool bolt (7) and bottom cap (6)
  3. Remove the SWAT CC body (1) from the fork steerer
  4. Remove the stem (3) and spacers from the fork steerer and remove the fork from the frame

  5. Remove the zero offset cup from the head tube and replace with the +/- 1 degree headset cup. The offset is etched onto the headset cup. Orient the offset you prefer toward the front of the bike.
*Note, you do not need to change the bottom headset cup as it works with all upper headset cup options

  6. Clean and grease the headset parts and bearings before installing into the frame (A: headset cover, B: compression ring, C: upper bearing, D: adjustable headset cup)

  7. Reassemble the stem assembly:
    1. Slide the fork steerer through the head tube and headset parts
    2. Install the spacers and stem (3) onto the fork steerer
    3. Place the SWAT CC body (1) in the top of the steerer tube, orienting the top cap so it can rotate 180 degrees without contacting the stem
    4. Place the SWAT tool bolt (7) in the bottom cap (6) and place the supplied O-ring to keep the bolt from falling out
    5. Place the bolt and cap assembly through the underside of the steerer tube (4) and then thread the bolt into the bottom of the SWAT CC body
    6. Once the bolt is threaded all the way in, position the bottom cap securely against the lip of the underside of the steer tube
    7. Adjust the headset compression until there's no back and forth movement and the headset rotates smoothly
    8. Once the headset is adjusted correctly, align the stem and torque the bolts according to the manufacturer's specifications (for Trail Stem, 8 Nm / 71 in-lbf)

    9. Tighten the bolt (7) enough to prevent it from loosening

Adjusting the Bottom Bracket Height

The flip chips in the shock extension raise/lower the bottom bracket height and shorten/length the chainstays. The bike is shipped with the flip chips in the low/long position.

To raise the bottom bracket height:

  1. Using a 4 mm hex key, remove the forward shock mounting bolt from the frame.
  2. Using a 6 mm hex key, remove the rear shock mounting bolt from the extension, then remove the shock from the frame.
  3. Remove the flip chips out of the rear shock eyelet.
  4. Rotate the two flip chip 180 degrees then insert them back into the rear shock eyelet.
  5. Re-install the shock/flip chip assembly back into the extension, then insert and loosely tighten the rear shock mounting bolt.
  6. Rotate and align the shock with the forward shock mount.
  7. Using a 4 mm hex key, torque the bolt to specification.
  8. Using a 6 mm hex key, torque the rear shock mounting bolt to specification.

Adjusting the Rear Wheel Size

The bike is shipped with a 27.5" rear wheel. To accommodate a 29" rear wheel, follow the instructions below.

  1. Remove the Horst pivot bolts from the frame (A).
  2. Remove all four flip-chips (B) and align the Horst Pivot spacer in the slot to either “high” or “low” position. When replacing the adjustable spacer, make sure it is correctly located into
the chainstay and that both parts of the flip-chip are aligned in the same direction.
  3. Reinstall the flip chips in the desired wheel size position. Make sure they are fully seated and aligned with the chain-stay protector before Inserting the bolt.
  4. Insert the Pivot bolts (A), then torque the bolt to the recommended torque setting.

Size S1 and S2 may have saddle/tire interference with a 29" rear wheel when the saddle is fully lowered and the shock is bottomed out. If you wish to switch to a 29" rear wheel for a S1 or S2 Levo SL, please follow the following instructions to check for interference before riding.

Shock specifications

The rear shock is direct mount 8 mm ID x 20 mm W. Shock length and stroke is 210 mm x 55 mm.

Please note: Suspension on a bicycle is a complete system. Specialized frames are designed in conjunction with the shocks and supporting parts that come factory installed. While many aftermarket shocks (air or coil) may physically fit on the bike, they may not be compatible with the frame. Always check with the shock manufacturer to confirm compatibility with your specific frame before purchasing and installing a different shock than what was originally supplied with the bike or frame.
